Girls are for STEM is an initiative of WIMSA to address the leaking pipeline in high school. Around age 16, young women talented in mathematics tend to drop out of the advanced math track, for completely the wrong reasons. By doing so, they are blocking many future career options in STEM-related occupations. WIMSA partners with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and with private high schools in the county, to provide advanced math classes for university credit to female high school student, juniors and seniors. The courses are specially designed for this talented young high school students. They are different from courses offered in the high schools, and are aimed to develop conceptual mathematical thinking as well as analytic skills. Cohorts of students in each of the units of the program will be kept small, to ensure personalized attention and individual mentorship. This initiative will encourage female high school students to pursue higher education in STEM fields, including mathematics.Mission Statement
